Barrier-Free Amendment to Ontario Building Code takes effect January 1, 2015

1 Jan 2015

New barrier-free design requirements to the 2012 Ontario building code take effect January 1, 2015. While some may argue these new requirements do not go far enough to creating accessible space for all in the built environment, it is nonetheless an extensive amendment to pre-2015 barrier-free requirements. The new barrier-free requirements will apply to design of new buildings (with a few exceptions) and renovations to existing buildings that are classified as "Extensive Renovations" under Part 11 of the OBC.

At Hanson + Jung, we have been carefully reviewing these new barrier-free code requirements and their implications as to how we design our spaces. Through ongoing educational seminars presented by partner Wilson Jung, our team of professionals are now ready to carry out designs that comply with the current code. Our next task is to continue to educate our clients on the new code requirements as they impact their business and facilities.
